Welcome to Day 28!
Today we will discuss how to navigate social situations that often sabotage our progress.
Social Situations:
Feel free to practice role playing with someone close to you that is supportive.  

Restaurant:
  • Know what you want to say ahead of time.  
  • Many will say something like, “I have allergies to gluten and dairy, and exposure can affect me to the point of ending up in the hospital”.  
  • Often the best way is to ask to speak to the chef.  Discuss cross contamination and hidden ingredients.  You can usually get a good idea if they are knowledgeable about food allergies just by talking to them.  If you are not comfortable - leave.  
  • Call ahead if you don’t want to get into the situation above.  Call in off hours when they can discuss it with you and you can access your comfort there.  ​
  • When friends and family want to go out to eat - know the places you can safely go and recommend those.  If it is out of your control to pick a place, call ahead and see if you can eat anything.  If not - eat ahead and order something simple like a salad (bring your own dressing).

Family gatherings:  
  • Offer to bring some dishes.
  • Kindly explain your situation and ask how you can help.
  • Offer to host instead
  • Kindly say that those foods just don’t support your health, and you need to eat differently than before.  You miss those foods and appreciate the efforts, but you simply do not tolerate them.  
  • Come up with other things to say - so you are prepared to answer in a way that does not put the other person on the defensive.
